About the Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Senior Analyst, Project Value Assurance and Engineering to join the Centerra Corporate team. This position is a hybrid role based at our Toronto, ON office.

Reporting jointly to the VP, Major Projects and Director, Metallurgy, the Senior Analyst, Project Value Assurance and Engineering is responsible for providing project assurance and financial and cost modeling expertise on all Centerra’s major capital projects with the intent of clearly assessing, articulating, and influencing the health and viability of all capital projects. This role will work closely with the Project Directors on Centerra’s projects and provide hands on engineering and execution support for projects at various phases of development, including working on cross-functional Centerra and consulting teams to solve business and technical challenges. This role is a highly dynamic role, with significant opportunities for growth and development. 

There are three main areas of focus for this role, working closely with Project Directors on Centerra’s critical projects at all stages of study development and execution:

Financial Modelling and Scenario Analysis:

  • Build robust and comprehensive standardized financial and cost models for various projects to determine project economics, and prepare comprehensive summaries of the findings for senior management presentations.
  • Coordinate with Centerra Projects group and Technical Services group to correctly incorporate and validate all technical and commercial aspects of the cost models.
  • Implement a standardized approach to all cost modeling, compliance with industry-standard (AACEI) level of definition and cost estimation, and ensuring appropriate and transparent approach to variable factors such as contingency and application of risk.
  • Coordinate with Centerra Financial Planning and Analysis group to correctly incorporate working capital, tax, and other financial model assumptions.
  • Perform scenario and sensitivity analysis to identify areas of opportunity or risk and to help optimize focus of technical studies.
  • Prepare business cases and reports regarding projects and initiatives and present recommendations and status updates to key stakeholders.
  • Perform peer reviews of pre-existing financial models and analysis completed by others.

Project Value Assurance and Execution Support:

  • Support various project directors in managing project study activities and initiatives and in performing critical analysis and summaries to help guide focus of study activities.
  • Assist in the risk management process, defining monitoring and quality criteria, monitoring performance and delivery, and leveraging best practices to advise, guide, and support.
  • Implement structured project reviews that enable the project management team in justifying the conclusions of project analysis, identifying weaknesses and shortcomings, and incorporating specific recommendations for improvements.
  • Provide hands on support to project directors for various projects in the execution phase. Support may include options analysis, project controls and scheduling, and in the field working directly with the project team and contractors to achieve project deliverable.
  • Execute analysis and assist in the implementation of initiatives related to high priority capital projects across the company to ensure that these projects are delivered safely, on time, and on budget.
  • Help to coordinate and manage opportunities to maintain and improve project economics through cost reduction, engineering, operations improvement, and strategic initiatives through the entire project value chain.
  • Review and understand industry best practices for project implementation and value assurance and recommend improvement efforts in a systematic and cohesive manner.
  • Actively participate in implementation of action plans across the entire project value chain and oversee them as appropriate.
  • When necessary, assist in the implementation of a governance structure, a communication plan, and/or tracking mechanisms to ensure results are achieved.
  • When necessary, assist in the advancement and management of project controls systems, processes and procedures.

Technical and Engineering Support:

  • While this role is not a technical discipline role, it is expected that this role will support various engineering activities, performing technical analysis that is required as inputs into specific engineering activities and deliverables.
  • Work closely with the various technical disciplines (e.g. mine planning, metallurgy, etc.) in performing analysis of outputs.
  • As appropriate, lead technical workstreams on select projects, overseeing the workplans, technical work, reviews of deliverables, and coordination with various technical disciplines.
  • Interact with Centerra project personnel, technical staff, contractors, mine site personnel and other members of the operations and technical group to keep up-to-date on developments in the company and mining industry.

About You

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Engineering degree required (e.g. mining, civil, mechanical, electrical engineering, etc.).
  • Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise (Ex. CFA) an asset.
  • Generally 7 – 10 years of related work experience or equivalent.
  • Significant experience in building financial models and cost models for small, medium and large mining capital projects.
  • Experience with project engineering and/or execution, with ‘on-the-ground’ experience an asset.
  • Previous experience in mining investment banking or research and/or the mining industry and/or with EPCM firms.
  • Good understanding of the mining industry and project execution.
  • Strong analytical skills, with demonstrated ability to compile and analyze large amounts of information.
  • Strong communication skills in presentation development, oral communication and other documentation.
  • Highly collaborative work style, ability to work with project, technical and financial leaders.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge in financial modeling and analysis.
  • Developed technical report writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to multitask.
  • Must be self-directed and work well in a highly unstructured environment; comfortable with uncertainty.
