About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for a Specialist, Operational Readiness to join our Thompson Creek team. Reporting to the Manager, Mill, the Specialist, Operational Readiness is responsible for preparatory activities required during a project related to safe delivery of effective systems of work, competent people, and reliable assets. This position enables the rapid transition of facilities, plants, and assets from a project team to an operating business unit prior to and during the commissioning phase. 

This position is a pivotal change agent responsible for collaborating with project teams, site operations leadership and front-line employees impacted by any change associated with the project to ensure long term sustainable operations and a timely ramp up to planned production targets. 

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead evaluation of operational readiness activities with site leadership across all mill functions including but not limited to, maintenance and operations, materials management, finance, safety, and environment.
  • Lead the development of comprehensive plans training, maintenance, operational procedures specific to the mill’s needs.
  • Coordinating the transfer of the facility from the project team to the operational team.
  • Identifying potential operational risk and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Ensuring that mill personnel have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate the facility safety and efficiently.
  • Developing and implementing maintenance scheduled and procedures for the mill’s equipment and systems.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve operational efficiency and sustainability.
  • Collaborate with project and site leadership to communicate operational readiness progress.
  • Generate regular and ad hoc reports for site leadership, to assist with the measurement of key performance indicators.

About You

To qualify, the following skills and experiences are required:

  • Bachelor's degree in a closely related discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • 5-10 years of experience in operational readiness activities.   
  • Strong understanding of mill operations, including processes, equipment, and maintenance requirements.  
  • Show increasing levels of responsibility and accountability based on education, training, acquired knowledge, skills development, and desire to advance within the organization(s). 
  • Familiarity with and an understanding of behavioral based safety programs and risk analysis is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to lead and motivate teams.
  • Experience in managing projects, particularly those involving the transition from project to operations.
  • Must be team oriented with a proven record of fostering both departmental and interdepartmental support, cooperation, and team building among employees.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills, have a strong understanding of mine production, maintenance, and engineering systems, able to communicate complex issues to all levels of the organization and have excellent use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other related software packages.
