About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for a Superintendent, Safety to join our Thompson Creek team. Reporting to the Manager, Safety and Security, the Superintendent, Safety is responsible for leading continuous improvement of safety and health a Thompson Creek Mine. The Superintendent, Safety will develop and facilitate the implementation and administration of safety and health management systems across the mine site and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements. 

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for supervising the safety advisors and technicians, security.  
  • Supervises the planning and administration of appropriate projects and Safety, Health, and Security training programs.
  • Serves as a key safety and health resource for the mine site management.
  • Conducts comprehensive assessments of safety plans, programs and work activities to identify improvement opportunities including risk assessments and safety inputs into the site risk register.
  • Provides support for managements investigation of injuries and incidents, providing training on analytical techniques to find root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Monitors and reports on completion of corrective actions resulting from investigations, inspections, risk analyses, audits, etc.
  • Assist in monitoring site contractors for compliance with company and contractual safety and health requirements.
  • Proactively lead health and safety for all employees in accordance with all regulatory agencies and policies, procedures and company and site goals.
  • Be a proactive role model for personal behaviors regarding compliance with policies procedures, and regulations.
  • Creates and implements procedures and policies related to safety and health.
  • Prepares technical reports, maintains safety related documentations and performs analysis on incident data for undesired trends and recommends corrective action.
  • Helps develop the departmental safety budget.
  • Responsible for record keeping and reporting related to safety, health, and security. 

About You

To qualify, the following skills and experiences are required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety or related field preferred.
  • Three to five years experience in safety and health in a supervisor role.
  • Show increasing levels of responsibility and accountability based on education, training, acquired knowledge, skills development, and desire to advance within the organization(s). 
  • Certified MSHA instructor.
  • Able to obtain certification of Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Familiarity with and an understanding of behavioral based safety programs and risk analysis is highly desirable. 
  • Ability to lead and motivate teams.
  • In depth experience with MSHA regulatory requirements.
  • Professional mine safety/health certification preferred (CMSP/CSP).
  • Must be team oriented with a proven record of fostering both departmental and interdepartmental support, cooperation and team building among employees.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills, have a strong understanding of mill production, maintenance, and engineering systems, able to communicate complex issues to all levels of the organization and have excellent use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other related software packages. 
  • Ability to develop/write Standard Operating Procedures from OEM manuals or field instructions/training.
