About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometers southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for an Specialist, Mill Training to join our Thompson Creek team. 

The Specialist, Mill Training provides technical expertise, structured training, coaching, and competency assessment across the mill department. This position develops, delivers, administers, and maintains the mill training and qualification system, including competency-based training programs, progression plans, standard operating procedures, technical learning materials, and field-based assessments to support safe, effective, and efficient mill commissioning, startup, ramp-up, and steady-state performance across operations, maintenance interfaces, metallurgy/process technical functions, assay and laboratory interfaces, tailings, water systems, and other mill-related work areas.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan, implement, and coordinate mill training programs that support safe work execution, operational readiness, maintenance readiness, technical capability, commissioning, startup, and production ramp-up.
  • Develop methods, tools, and reporting processes to measure training effectiveness, competency progression, field performance, technical understanding, and readiness against mill department requirements.
  • Develop and implement mill training programs and workflows for crushing, grinding, flotation, reagent handling, tailings, water systems, mobile equipment interfaces, control room operations, maintenance interfaces, metallurgical sampling, process troubleshooting, assay and laboratory interfaces, and other mill-related work areas.
  • Identify training and development requirements by conducting needs analyses, gap assessments, field observations, incident reviews, procedure reviews, and consultation with mill leadership, supervisors, operators, maintenance, metallurgy, engineering, commissioning, safety, environmental, laboratory, and technical teams.
  • Demonstrate competence in competency-based learning principles and their application across the mill department; coach employees on process equipment, operating practices, maintenance and reliability interfaces, field rounds, control room response, inspections, troubleshooting, sampling, technical checks, and safe task execution.
  • Professionally deliver and facilitate mill training, including classroom instruction, field demonstrations, simulator or scenario-based exercises where available, technical workshops, and on-the-job coaching to support employee development, operating discipline, and cross-functional mill readiness.
  • Create and maintain competency-based learning materials, qualification checklists, field assessment tools, operating task breakdowns, technical task references, and training records for mill department work areas. Work with the training team, mill leadership, subject matter experts, engineering, commissioning, operations readiness, maintenance, metallurgy, environmental, and laboratory teams to develop and maintain SOPs, operating guidelines, technical standards, and training packages.
  • Conduct on-the-job competency assessments and technical work performance evaluations for trainees, operators, supervisors, and subject matter experts to verify required job competence, identify follow-up coaching needs, and recommend employee readiness or qualification for assigned mill work areas.
  • Exercise independent judgment in assessing mill employee competency, identifying training gaps, establishing training priorities, developing qualification requirements, and making recommendations to Mill Operations leadership regarding employee readiness for assigned operating duties.
  • Provide meaningful input to Mill Operations leadership and Human Resources regarding employee selection, continued qualification, corrective action, performance concerns, and removal from independent operation when competency, safety, or operating discipline expectations are not met.
  • Identify, select, coordinate, and support external training providers, OEM training, vendor support, and specialist technical resources required to execute the mill training plan.
  • Support Centerra and Thompson Creek Mine safety training objectives by embedding critical controls, field-level risk management, isolation/lockout expectations, confined space awareness, chemical handling, mobile equipment interaction, lifting and rigging awareness, environmental controls, and emergency response requirements into mill training materials.
  • Modify, develop, and maintain mill procedures, training manuals, qualification matrices, technical references, and operating standards to ensure alignment with Centerra standards, regulatory requirements, site procedures, equipment requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Facilitate site-wide and department-specific training sessions as required, with emphasis on mill readiness, process safety, equipment familiarization, maintenance and operations interfaces, technical awareness, and startup execution.
  • Coordinate training schedules, maintain training records, monitor attendance and completion, and report progress against the mill training plan, staffing plan, maintenance and technical readiness needs, and commissioning/startup readiness milestones.
  • Ensure mill training activities are planned, budgeted, tracked, and delivered within approved cost and schedule constraints.
  • Identify and pursue available training resources, funding opportunities, internal expertise, and external support that improve the effectiveness and sustainability of the mill training program.

About You

To qualify, the following skills and experiences are required:

  • 10 years of relevant mineral processing, mill department, commissioning, startup, maintenance interface, technical training, or operations training experience, with demonstrated ability to develop and implement competency-based training programs.
  • Must have practical knowledge and experience across mill functions, including crushing, grinding, flotation, tailings, reagents, process control, sampling, assay and laboratory interfaces, maintenance and reliability interfaces, inspections, equipment isolation, environmental controls, and safe work practices.
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Formal workplace training and assessment qualification, or equivalent experience, in the design, development, implementation, delivery, assessment, and evaluation of competency-based learning programs.
