About Mount Milligan Mine
Located approximately 155 kilometres northwest of Prince George in central BC, the Mount Milligan Mine is a conventional truck-shovel open-pit copper and gold mine and concentrator with a 60,000 tpd capacity copper flotation processing plant.
Mount Milligan operates with comfortable camp accommodations equipped with private washrooms, TV, Wi-Fi, an onsite gym, and other recreational activities. Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from several locations within the region.
Mount Milligan promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.
About the Opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mount Milligan Mine (MTM) operations site.
This role operates on a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off at a 12-hour daily schedule with camp accommodations provided.
Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure and Engineering, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for providing geotechnical and tailings management leadership on the alternate operating rotation. The incumbent will support the safe operation, monitoring, construction, and stewardship of the TSF and associated geotechnical infrastructure while ensuring continuity of critical geotechnical programs across all operating shifts.
The role supports the site TSF QP, Engineer of Record (EoR), and operational teams through risk management, technical oversight, monitoring, investigation, and implementation of geotechnical and tailings-related projects. The successful candidate will serve as the primary geotechnical resource during their assigned rotation and contribute to the development and continuous improvement of geotechnical and tailings management systems.
The incumbent will bring a strong understanding of industry-leading practices, geotechnical risk management, and operational excellence, while fostering a culture committed to safety, environmental stewardship, and responsible mining.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Geotechnical Leadership & Risk Management
- Provide geotechnical leadership and technical support during assigned rotation.
- Act as the primary geotechnical contact for operations during assigned rotation.
- Support safe operation of TSFs and water management infrastructure.
- Review monitoring data and identify emerging geotechnical risks.
- Participate in geotechnical risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analyses.
- Lead or support geotechnical investigations, including drilling programs, field testing, instrumentation installation, and performance assessments.
- Mentor junior engineers, technologists, and technicians as required.
Tailings Storage Facility Management
- Support the site TSF Qualified Person in fulfilling obligations under the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia.
- Support implementation and maintenance of the Tailings Management System and associated governance programs.
- Manage and oversee TSF monitoring programs, including instrumentation, inspections, and performance evaluations.
- Support planning, execution, and quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) activities associated with TSF construction projects.
- Review and assess TSF performance data and recommend corrective actions where required.
- Support the Senior Water Resources Engineer for management of TSF water balance and associated water management infrastructure.
- Participate in meetings and action-item management associated with the EoR and Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB) programs.
- Support preparation of technical reports, annual reviews, dam safety inspections, and regulatory submissions.
- Participate in engagements with regulators, consultants, and external stakeholders as required.
Continuous Improvement
- Support development and implementation of geotechnical and tailings management best practices.
- Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement in monitoring, risk management, and operational performance.
- Contribute to short- and long-term tailings planning initiatives.
- Support succession planning and development of technical capability within the site geotechnical team.
About You
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia or eligible for registration.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience, preferably in mining operations.
- Demonstrated experience with tailings storage facilities, dam safety, geotechnical risk management, and mine infrastructure.
- Experience with TSF design, construction, operation, and monitoring programs.
- Experience with slope stability analysis, seepage analysis, and geotechnical modeling software.
- Experience leading geotechnical investigations, including drilling, field testing, and instrumentation programs.
- Experience managing consultants, contractors, and technical work programs.
- Experience supporting Dam Safety Inspections and Dam Safety Reviews.
- Supervisory or mentoring experience is considered an asset.
- Possess a valid driver’s license.
- Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering principles, dam safety practices, and tailings management.
- Working knowledge of applicable provincial and federal regulations, industry guidelines, and best practices related to mining and tailings facilities.
- Ability to independently assess, communicate, and manage geotechnical risk.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound operational decisions in a dynamic mining environment.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
- Proven ability to build effective working relationships across operations, maintenance, engineering, contractors, and management teams.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and drive timely completion of critical work.
- Self-motivated with strong organizational and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and continuous improvement.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Working Conditions
- Work involves a camp-based role at the Mount Milligan Mine site with a set work schedule on a 14x14, 12 hours per day
- Candidates must be able to maintain high levels of performance for extended shifts, up to 12 hours in duration
- Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
