About the Kemess Mine
Kemess is located in north-central British Columbia, approximately 250 km north of Smithers and 430 km northwest of Prince George, with fly-in access. The property is host to the former Kemess South (KS) Mine, the Kemess Underground (KUG) deposit, and the Kemess East (KE) deposit.
We have an opportunity for a full-time Environmental Technician to join our Kemess Mine operations site.
This is a camp-based position, with a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off, with a 12-hour daily schedule.
Reporting to the Environmental Coordinator, you will assist in the safe operations of Kemess mine by performing several environment-focused duties. This field role is perfect for physically fit individuals who love nature, as you will be required to work outdoors for long periods, in all weather conditions.
The Environment Technician will perform environmental monitoring and sampling duties to maintain compliance with site permits and conserve environmental integrity. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to take part in various projects including reclamation, hydrological monitoring, and environmental effects monitoring, among others.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Participating in field projects, including hydrology, groundwater, in-stream, and environmental effects monitoring.
- Assisting with data analysis and writing reports.
- Participating in surface and groundwater sampling as well as performing hydrology surveys.
- Working safely and contributing to efficient Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) practices by the Kemess team and all contractors.
- Conducting inspections and audits.
- Interacting and communicating effectively within a multidisciplinary team consisting of environmental professionals, engineers, and contractors.
- Ensure water, dustfall and partisol samples are handled correctly while in the field, packaged for shipping appropriately, and shipped to achieve prescribed hold times and temperatures.
- Ensure field data (e.g., field sheets and notes) are recorded, scanned, and filed in the appropriate place and in a timely manner.
- Maintain and calibrate field instruments as set out per site SOPs and manufacturer recommendations.
- Assist with wildlife monitoring programs, including wildlife camera and data management.
- Respond to and document any spills, along with keeping the site spill/incident log current.
- Implement erosion and sediment control best practices and progressive reclamation activities.
- Monitor water retaining and drainage structures to ensure capacity for runoff, as required.
- Actively participate and engage with Kemess’s safety culture.
About You
The following skills and experiences will also be critical to successfully performing this role:
- University degree or college diploma in fish and wildlife, environmental science, or another relevant field of study (asset).
- Previous experience with environmental monitoring/sampling: stream/lake sampling, benthic/sediment, groundwater, fish/vegetation, erosion/sedimentation, etc. (asset).
- Experience mentoring or coaching less experienced Monitors or Technicians (asset).
- Detail oriented with ability to take clear, concise, and defensible field notes.
- Valid Level 1 First Aid Certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
- ATV and snowmobile operator's certificate (or willingness to undertake training).
- Pleasure craft license (or willingness to undertake training).
- Able and willing to perform labor-intensive tasks, such as hiking or carrying heavy equipment to work sites in adverse weather conditions.
- Valid Canadian Driver’s License (Class 5 or equivalent).
- Basic knowledge of power equipment, electrical systems, and hand tools.
- Self-motivated, team player with a positive attitude and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

- Strong interpersonal skills with a diverse team.
