About the Kemess Mine

Kemess is located in north-central British Columbia, approximately 250 km north of Smithers and 430 km northwest of Prince George, with fly-in access. The property is host to the former Kemess South (KS) Mine, the Kemess Underground (KUG) deposit, and the Kemess East (KE) deposit. 

Existing on-site infrastructure includes offices, warehouse, laydowns, maintenance facilities, a 300-person accommodation camp footprint, crushed ore stockpile and reclaim, access and service roads, an airstrip, explosives magazines, and an electrical substation.

About the Opportunity

This position requires union membership under the International Union of Operating Engineers.

We have an opportunity for a full-time Trade Electrician to join our Kemess Mine operations site.

This is a camp-based position, with a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off, with a 12-hour daily schedule. 

Reporting to the Site Services Supervisor, the Electrician will be responsible for maintaining, installing and repairing all electrical systems throughout the site to ensure equipment and mine infrastructure runs smoothly and has minimal breakdowns. The incumbent in this position is responsible for keeping potentially over 300 persons safe from electrical hazards (when not in care and maintenance). This position is part of a unionized workforce and is subject to the terms and conditions of the collective bargaining agreement.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure all electrical systems are operating effectively by following a regular maintenance program.
  • Maintain and repair the high voltage power lines and substations (120V to 250KV). Basic Lineman experiences an asset.
  • Familiar with Fire panels, devices emergency lighting.
  • Willing to perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing ladders, crawling under trailers and moving heavy objects.
  • Inspect certain areas of the mine site and sign off on circuits and equipment functioning properly.
  • Keep accurate maintenance and repair records, ensuring any changes to electrical instruments are accurately documented.
  • Work with transformers up to 90 Meg and generators up to 2.5 Meg and their associated switch gear.
  • Work with large motors both Synchronous and Induction up to and including 6000 hp.
  • Identify any faults in the power line (we maintain 432 kilometers of privately-owned power line).
  • Weekly inspections of the site fixed and portable nuclear gauges.
  • Take actions where required to ensure compliance with environmental permits.
  • Would be an asset to be able to operate various types of heavy equipment in all seasons.
  • Maintain stock for electrical systems.
  • Performs any other responsibilities related to the Electrician role as required or as assigned by the department head.

About You

To qualify for the Trade Electrician role, the following skills and experiences will be critical to successfully performing this position:

  • Journeyperson - Certified Electrician with 5+ years of experience in heavy industry.
  • Ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems; mechanically inclined skillset.
  • Excellent safety record.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to plan, execute and complete projects as team member while observing safe work practice and code.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs., climb ladders and stairs and operate manlifts and Bucket trucks.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Computer skills including and not limited to PLC and VFD systems.
  • Instrumentation experience would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Auto Cad would be an asset.
  • Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.
