About the Opportunity

The Global Category Manager is responsible for leading the development and execution of global category strategies for major spend areas, ensuring alignment with business goals and delivering cost efficiency, supply availability, and supply quality. This role involves managing supplier relationships, leading contract negotiations, and driving continuous improvement in the procurement processes. Potential categories could include fuel and lube, mobile equipment, explosives, grinding media and liners, and tires/tire consumables. The Global Category Manager reports to the Global Supply Chain Director.

The preferred location for this position is Toronto, ON, with the potential for remote candidates across North America.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Global Category Strategy Development: Create and implement comprehensive global category strategies aimed at optimizing spend, improving supplier performance, and mitigating risks. Ensure these strategies are aligned with the overall business objectives, including indigenous engagement, and are adaptable to changing market conditions.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead cross-functional teams in identifying and executing cost-saving initiatives and process improvements
  • Market Analysis and Best Practices: Conduct thorough market analysis to stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and emerging risks. Utilize this information to continuously refine category strategies and enhance procurement effectiveness
  • Procurement Process Management: Oversee the end-to-end procurement process, from sourcing and supplier selection to contract negotiation and administration. Ensure all procurement activities comply with company policies, regulatory requirements, and global procurement standards
  • Supplier Performance Management: Monitor and evaluate supplier performance against contractual obligations and KPIs. Work with suppliers to resolve issues, drive continuous improvement, and ensure the delivery of high-quality goods and services
  • Supplier and Stakeholder Relationships: Foster strong relationships with key suppliers, including indigenous suppliers, and internal stakeholders to promote collaboration and innovation
  • Procurement Performance Metrics: Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of procurement performance metrics. Provide regular reporting on procurement activities, supplier performance, and category management outcomes to senior leadership
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with internal stakeholders to ensure procurement activities are aligned with business objectives and operational needs. Facilitate communication between departments to ensure that category strategies support broader company goals
  • RFX Management: Develop, issue, and manage tender documents (RFPs, RFQs, RFIs), aligning with supplier negotiation best practices
  • Risk Management: Conduct risk assessments for contractual agreements and develop strategies to mitigate identified risks, ensuring alignment with Centerra's Global Procurement Policy
  • Compliance Monitoring: Ensure all contracts comply with regulatory requirements and internal policies, initiating corrective actions as needed
  • Mentorship and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship, and encourage a culture of continuous learning, sharing best practices and promoting professional development
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline category management practices. Support Procurement Enablement team to integrate continuous improvement efforts into Centerra best practices and policies
  • ESG and Compliance: Ensure that all suppliers comply with ESG standards and that procurement activities align with the company’s sustainability and compliance policies.

About You

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Post-secondary education in business, supply chain, or other related field is required.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in procurement or supply chain roles, with a minimum of three (3) years in a category management role.
  • Professional certifications such as CPSM, CIPS, or equivalent are highly desirable.
  • Experience managing category strategies (e.g., fuel and lube, mobile equipment, explosives, grinding media and liners, and tires/tire consumables) is highly desirable.
  • Experience in SAP is preferred. Experience with Ariba or Coupa is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the mining industry or other asset-intensive industries is an advantage.
  • Extensive experience in global category management, with a strong track record of developing and implementing successful procurement strategies.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive collaboration across departments.
  • Strong negotiation skills, with experience in securing favorable terms and managing complex contracts.
  • In-depth knowledge of market trends, industry best practices, and risk management strategies.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to conduct detailed market analysis and apply insights to procurement strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with suppliers and stakeholders.
  • Commitment to mentoring and developing junior team members, fostering a culture of learning and excellence.
  • Understanding of ESG standards and experience in ensuring compliance with sustainability and corporate policies.
