About the Kemess Mine

Kemess is located in north-central British Columbia, approximately 250 km north of Smithers and 430 km northwest of Prince George, with fly-in access. The property is host to the former Kemess South (KS) Mine, the Kemess Underground (KUG) deposit, and the Kemess East (KE) deposit. 

We have an opportunity for a fixed-term Technician, Environmental (Summer Student) to join our Kemess Mine operations site.

This is a camp-based position, with a rotation of 14 days on / 14 days off, with a 12-hour daily schedule. 

Reporting to the Senior Environmental Coordinator, you will be responsible for implementing the site environmental monitoring programs in collaboration with other team members. This role is intended for summer term candidates who are interested in pursuing a career in environment and mining. Transportation to the site is via charter flight from Prince George and Smithers. 

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Conduct flow measurements in streams and weirs
• Install, maintain, and retrieve data from a network of hydrometric stations
• Complete water level and benchmark surveys using an automatic level and survey rod
• Maintain a database of hydrometric data, update rating curves, and apply corrections as required
• Collect surface water samples from various sites which are accessed by hiking, driving, boating, or helicopter
• Ensure water and air samples are handled correctly when in the field, packaged for shipping appropriately, and shipped to achieve prescribed hold times and temperatures
• Ensure field data (e.g., field sheets and notes) are recorded, scanned, and filed in the appropriate place and in a timely manner
• Complete reconnaissance sampling of potential water quality risks (e.g., seepage, ML/ARD) and any other monitoring tasks outlined in permits or site monitoring plans
• Maintain and calibrate field instruments as set out per site SOPs and manufacturer recommendations
• Observe wildlife on-site and assist with wildlife monitoring programs
• Maintain cleanliness of environment department vehicles and facilities
• Respond to and document any spills, along with keeping the site spill/incident log up to date
• Implement erosion and sediment control best practices and progressive reclamation activities
• Operate pick-up trucks, ATVs, and small engine equipment in a safe manner
• Monitor and maintain water retaining and drainage structures to ensure capacity for runoff
• Provide field support for other environmental monitoring programs and consultants as required
• Support in the planning and execution of various environmental initiatives

About You

To qualify, you must be a  Post-secondary Student, studying in related field (environmental science, technology, engineering, or biology) The following skills and experiences will also be critical to successfully performing this role:.

• Self-motivated, team player with a positive attitude and the ability to work with minimal supervision
• Previous experience in environmental monitoring, the resource sector, or industrial environments is considered an asset
• A valid Canadian Driver’s License
• Good computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Strong attention to detail in data entry, equipment maintenance, and lab work
• Motivation for on-the-job training and career progression
• Basic knowledge of power equipment, electrical systems, and hand tools
• Excellent written/verbal communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills
• Strong safety consciousness and adherence to safe work practices
• Able to thrive in a fast-past environment with multiple priorities
• Required to meet pre-employment testing requirements.
