About the Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Vice President, Technical Services to join the Centerra Corporate team. This position is a hybrid role based at our Toronto, ON office.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President, Technical Services is responsible for all aspects of mine and tailings engineering, including the overall planning, supervision and completion of Centerra’s mineral reserves estimates, strategic mine planning and the technical reporting of production plans to proper standards for all operating mines and advanced projects within Centerra Gold Inc. The incumbent will provide leadership for full optimization of life of mine planning & strategy; as well as technical support for operations and development activities on a corporate-wide basis for all aspects of mining and tailings engineering.  This role will ensure Centerra’s reserves and mine development plans are reliable and optimally valued; and will act as a senior point of contact for all technical employees involved in these functions and will also provide recommendations on current and emerging practices and technologies related to his/her field and implement recommendations that are a source of key competitive advantage.

In addition to the above, this position will be responsible for the overall technical evaluation of mineral reserves, mine planning, geotechnical engineering, tailings designs and potential for expansion of possible reserves for project acquisitions, advance staged exploration projects, joint ventures and strategic evaluation for Centerra’s existing assets.
 
The successful candidate will act as a corporate Qualified Person (QP) to ensure that all public reserves and mining engineering related public disclosure is current and in compliance with current securities legislation requirements. The incumbent requires suitable advanced mining operations and design experience in order to be able to effectively evaluate the potential of possible acquisitions and makes material contributions to recommendations on significant potential business investments, often with limited time available to analyze technical information.

This role works in close association with Centerra’s operating sites and corporate exploration and geology teams, engineering personnel, the corporate development group, the corporate capital projects group, the regional exploration managers and staff and the legal and corporate IR/communications departments.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensure that the proper procedures are in place for the estimation and classification of mineral reserves and production planning under various economic parameters at the Companies’ worldwide operating mines and advanced projects.
  • As a corporate QP for reserves, a P.Eng for a Canadian province is required. Responsibilities include compiling, monitoring, and auditing of the mineral reserve estimates and life of mine forecasts for all the Companies operations and material projects on an annual basis and ensures the reporting compliance with Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) regulations contained in National Instrument 43-101.
  • Liaison with the site operating, metallurgical and project teams; responsible for long term strategic planning and optimization of Centerra’s assets for all aspects of mine engineering and tailings engineering and a key contributor to optimization of the financial model for these assets.
  • Provide technical support and liaison with operating sites where necessary for pit design optimization, LOM production scheduling, mine equipment selection, strategic options analysis, permitting support, etc.
  • Provide guidance and support for optimal application of mine engineering principles in operations, ensures use current technologies and cross-functional execution of geology, mine engineering and metallurgy.
  • Evaluate and mitigate the risks to Centerra with respect to Centerra’s pit wall stabilities, waste dump management, leadership of the tailings engineering team and determination of potential future risks.
  • Conduct reviews and/or complete mineral reserves estimations of deposits located under evaluation by the Business/Corporate Development Group, as well as potential joint ventures with other corporations.
  • Act on behalf of the Corporation, Senior Officers and Directors by reviewing and approving all public disclosure concerning material mineral reserves prior to release in the press and on the Company website.
  • Represent the Company by presenting mineral reserve data to outside mining consultants and auditors employed by banks and other major lending institutions for financing proposals, and to government or other authorities for regulatory purposes.
  • Provide technical support to operating sites in the area of cost and productivity improvements in the daily mine operations.
  • Evaluate costs, engineering and mine planning data and provides direction and guidance for continual improvement to the operating technical teams.
  • Provide direction and leadership to both internal staff and external consultants or contractors engaged in providing technical support activities to the Company.

About You

To qualify, you must have a university degree in mine engineering and/or geological engineering, along with 20+ years of relevant work experience. Although not required, additional specialized education at a master’s level degree or Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) is highly beneficial for this role.

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • Minimum of 10 years previous experience of managing and leadership of a Technical Services team of mining engineers and related disciplines.
  • P.Eng designation for a Canadian province is required. 
  • High level of proficiency of mine planning systems used for pit design optimization, life of mine scheduling and overall mine operations.
    • Extensive knowledge of how mine planning software systems function for leadership of the mine engineering team (ie. Gemcom, Surpac, Vulcan, Datamine, Medsystem, Whittle 4D, MineShed etc.)
  • Exhibit an interest / aptitude for evaluation of new technologies, potential mine design opportunities for due diligence purposes, etc. as well as an interest for continually improved understanding in periphery disciplines such as geology, tailings engineering, metallurgical engineering, etc.
  • Knowledge of CIM mineral reserve/resource definitions and guidelines, OSC reporting regulations such as National Instrument 43-101 and TSE disclosure standards.
  • Advance level skills in Excel and financial models: ability to build financial models, working with the corporate development team (re: inputs into a proforma model) and finance teams (re: corporate budget and forecasts).
  • Firm understanding of both open pit and underground mining operations and procedures.
  • Strong communications and presentation skills, a strong inclination towards career development for their direct reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills with all levels of management; effective at developing strong credibility and working relationships.
  • Proven leadership success dealing with cross-functional teams in delivering value and results to the organization.
  • Five or more years of experience with exposure to financial modeling, corporate & operations budgeting and corporate strategy would be an asset.
