About Thompson Creek Mine

The Thompson Creek Mine is a primary, surface molybdenum mine and mill located approximately 48 kilometres southwest of the town of Challis in Idaho's Custer County.

In operations since 1983, the mine uses conventional open-pit mining methods with large electric-powered shovels that can each move up to 100,000 tons of waste rock and ore per day.

Thompson Creek Mine promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.

About The Opportunity

We are looking for a Manager, Health, Safety & Security to join our Thompson Creek team.  

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans, implements, and coordinates the operation's safety program to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses; develops accident-prevention and loss-control systems and programs for incorporation into operational policies of the location.   Ensures regulatory compliance as mandated by Federal, State, and local agencies including MSHA and by Company safety policies.  Serves as a Company liaison between the community, competition, and appropriate regulatory agencies.  Manages Worker's Compensation program.
  • Conducts routine and follow-up safety and hazard inspections of facility.  Responds to and investigates reports of hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions; submits recommendations to management and/or takes appropriate action to mitigate potential safety, health, and environmental risks.
  • Supervises department personnel which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution; evaluates performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Oversees the development and management of annual departmental operating budget; develops and implements systems to maintain records on employees, equipment inventories and compliance activities.  Establishes departmental goals and tracks performance vs. objectives.
  • Ensure continued and consistent rollout and alignment with Centerra’s Safety Leadership Programs to include – Work Safe/Home Safe, Mitigation of Fatal Risks, Visible Felt Leadership, etc.…
  • Development and support of Centerra’s OHSS objectives and goals (i.e. – leading indicator initiatives, risk management like critical control management, data analysis though IsoMetrix, monthly and quarterly reporting requirements and of course investigating incidents down to the root cause through our TapRooT processes.)
  • Modify/Develop TCM Security Procedures Manual to ensure alignment with Centerra Security standards and implement standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

About You

To qualify, the following skills and experiences are required:

  • Must have strong working knowledge of chemical, hazardous waste, industrial hygiene, fire and/or environmental health standards along with working knowledge of Federal, State, and local safety regulations, protocols and procedures associated with mining activities.
  • Must be skilled in development of accident prevention and loss-control systems and possess the ability to develop, implement and enforce safety programs and protocols.
  • Must have the ability to foster a cooperative work environment, supervise and train assigned staff, communicate, and interact with officials at all levels of the Company and government and to develop and present educational programs and workshops.
  • Must be knowledgeable of budgeting, cost estimating, and fiscal management principles and procedures, use of computers preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment and can develop and maintain record keeping systems and procedures.
  • Must have experience and provide oversight in Emergency Response
  • Bachelor's degree in related technical, scientific, or engineering discipline with 5-7 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified or 7-8 years of experience in related field.
  • Critical thinking and critical thinking skills; ability to use logic and reasoning to analyze and identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
