About the Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Vice President, Commercial to join the Centerra Corporate team. This position is a remote role based within North America. 

Reporting to Centerra’s Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, the position of Vice President, Commercial directs and provides global commercial leadership and is responsible for maximizing profitability for the purchase and sale of the Company’s metal products with a focus on selling copper-gold concentrate, buying molybdenum concentrate, and selling molybdenum products.

Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Development and execution of the purchase, sales and marketing strategy of the Company’s metal products with transaction values of over $1B.
  • Develop, manage and optimize a sales book.
  • Lead the Company’s buying of molybdenum concentrate and selling of molybdenum products for the Molybdenum Business Unit (MBU):
    • Lead feedstock sourcing and sales of products with a focus on margins, capital efficiency and Mo price exposure as the MBU scales over the next 5 years.
    • Strategic leader with a constructive negotiation style and established commercial relationships in the Mo, Cu, Steel and/or Steel alloys business.
    • Drive commercial excellence of the MBU through market development, feedstock procurement, product portfolio evolution and sales, contract management and effective coordination with operations, logistics and finance.
    • Lead global purchasing and sales with emphasis on North America, South America, Europe, China, India.
    • Lead the negotiations for multiple and complex concentrate and metal products contracts, including pricing mechanisms, quotational periods, assay chemistries, etc.
    • Lead the profitable growth and scalability of the business in a heavily concentrated market where competitors may be larger and globally positioned.
  • Lead the Company’s copper-gold concentrate sales strategy to maximize economic returns, including:
    • Evaluating trade-offs between long-term and spot sales contracts.
    • Evaluating potential buyers for the Company’s copper-gold concentrate reviewing the dynamics in various countries to ensure concentrate is sold to the optimal final parties.
    • Negotiating the core terms with buyers on treatment charges, refining charges, penalties, minimum grades, assaying processes and other aspects to optimize sale contracts.
    • Working closely with mine site operations and logistics teams to assess potential modifications to concentrate strategy that could improve overall mine economics.
    • Lead global sales with emphasis on finding the most advantageous countries/buyers globally for the specific of the Company’s copper-gold concentrate. 
  • Understand the dynamics of working through various sales channels, including direct-to-customer and via agents/brokers/traders.
  • Responsible for managing and navigating risk factors that affect profitability and cash flow:
    • contracting in a market with highly volatile pricing.
    • optimizing quotational periods.
    • assessing and managing customer / supplier financial risk.
    • managing working capital exposure.
  • Build and sustain customer relationships with miners, traders, steel producers, chemical producers and act as primary liaison between individual mines/facilities and the related customers.
  • Acts as Centerra’s in-house expert on molybdenum and copper market dynamics.
  • Maintain 1-, 3-, and 5-year plans for volume, product mix, margin, working capital and price exposure based on supply and sales pipelines and priority relationships. Update forecasts as needed with frequent next 1-, and 2-year updates during contracting season, assist in evaluating performance vs. contracts on key terms and assist in budget reviews, planning meetings and investment decisions.

About You

The following will be critical to successfully performing this role:

  • 10+ years in the metals & mining industry; knowledge of and relationships in molybdenum, steel and steel alloy markets preferred along with knowledge of copper-gold concentrate/supply.
  • Degree in Commodity Economics, Industrial Marketing, Materials Sciences, Engineering, or related field; MBA or advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years in commercial operations at an executive level, ideally in a growth environment.
  • Experience navigating metals market volatility including management of net price exposure, quotational periods, A/R and other working capital terms is required. Experience in markets and sales of molybdenum by-products of rhenium and sulfuric acid is an asset.
  • Experience in the marketing and sale of copper concentrates is required.
  • Experience in maintaining robust industry intelligence points of view, contacts, and sources.
  • Proven ability to develop new markets either directly or through 3rd party relationships.
  • Sufficient technical understanding to evolve value spreads and product mix based on customer and supplier needs, technical benefits and commercial alternatives.
  • Sufficient financial and planning acumen to maintain robust plans, supply and sales pipelines and optimize key metrics of margins, price exposure, working capital etc.
  • Extensive experience and product knowledge in the global steel market is required.
  • Highly self-motivated and entrepreneurial with a dedication to successfully profitably growing a business.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and personal presence.
  • Ability to maintain constructive long-term relationships regardless of any specific commercial outcomes.
  • Strategic mindset with business acumen in negotiations and proficiency in contract intricacies.
  • Strong financial and planning, analytical problem-solving with data-driven decision-making capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel for client meetings, industry events, and market exploration and development.
  • Exceptional negotiation and commercial skills.
  • Collaborates well with sites and involves others in decision-making, as appropriate.
